Exhibition: Resilience – stories of women inspiring change

Together with the World Press Photo Foundation and the Dutch Embassy in China, our Cultural Centre in Beijing opened the exhibition “Resilience – stories of women inspiring change” on International Women’s Day 2024.

The exhibition showcased a selection of award-winning photos from the World Press Photo competition from 2000 to 2021.

17 photographers from 13 different nationalities portrayed topics such as sexism, gender-based violence, sexual rights and women’s rights and struggles for equal opportunities.

The selected stories explored how women and gender issues have evolved in the 21st century and showed how photojournalism has evolved as a medium and platform for women’s struggles.

Audiences could among others experience the works:

“Finding Freedom in the Water” by Anna Boyiazis, which tells the story of young women in Zanzibar who defy tradition and learn to swim and perform rescue operations in the Indian Ocean off Muyuni Beach, and “Crying for Freedom” by Forough Alaei, which documents female Iranian football fans who disguise themselves as men to enter the country’s stadiums and fight for women’s rights.
