The Little Mermaid in Mykolaiv, Ukraine

On June 1st – International Children’s Day – the Mykolaiv Drama Theatre, located just 30 km from the frontline, performed a child friendly version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid to a full house.

The theatre, which was bombed in 2022, had been rebuilt and provided the setting for a powerful experience about longing, courage, and sacrifice – a striking example of how the themes of the classic fairy tale speak directly to the Ukrainian reality.
