Edith Buttingsrud & Cisne Negro Ballet

Danish choreographer Edith Buttingsrud Pedersen was invited to São Paulo by the Brazilian ballet company Cisne Negro. The result was PASSION, a contemporary dance piece (35 minutes) which Danish Cultural Institute and the Goethe-Institut helped bring to life.
Inspired by a novel by the Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, the performance explores questions of identity, courage, class divide, freedom, and how we might coexist without prejudice and hierarchy. The choreography emerged through an open, investigative process in which the dancers drew on their own experiences and allowed the movement to grow organically as a community. PASSION premiered at SESC in São Paulo in May and is now part of Cisne Negro’s repertoire, touring both nationally and internationally.
