Climate Migration: impacts and challenges
On the 17th of May at 18:00 Danish Cultural Institute in Riga is organising a debate on “Climate Migration: impacts and challenges” in the frame of Conference: The Economics, Politics and Ethics of Climate Change and Sustainability. The day before DCI presents another event that is part of the conference.
During the Climate Migration debate climate policies will be discussed, as well as who the “climate refugees” are and what significance the phenomenon has in Latvia. What are the challenges that climate change brings in the context of migration and how should we act towards it to make this world a better place to live in?
Key speakers:
Nils Holtug – professor of Political Philosophy and Director of the Centre for Advanced Migration Studies, University of Copenhagen. He works mainly on issues of distribution justice and of migration. He is the author of a number of books, including Persons, Interests, and Justice (Oxford University Press 2010). Presently, he is working on a book titled The Politics of Social Cohesion. Immigration, Community and Justice (under contract with Oxford University Press).
Arta Krūmiņa – MA in Geography and Sociology; working on PhD proposal. Arta’s research interests are Latvians abroad. Since 2009 she is working on historical forms of mobility and the study of non-traditional migratory movements. At the same time, Arta is working in nature conservation projects. She has worked in World Wide Fund For Nature in Latvia, Nature conservation agency. Currently, she is involved in European Union LIFE+ programme project.
Janis Brizga – Head of the Board at the NGO Green Liberty in Latvia and researcher at the University of Latvia. Previously, he was a chair of NGO network ANPED – The Northern Alliance for Sustainability, the Environmental Policy Programme Director at WWF-Latvia, the Executive Director at Coalition Clean Baltic Latvia’s office. He has received a Ph.D. in geography, Environmental Science and Master of Social Science in Public Administration at the University of Latvia. He is working on issues of sustainable development and sustainable consumption governance and environmentally friendly behavior. Janis Brizga is a member of the Global Research Forum on Sustainable Consumption and Production as well as a member of the board of the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), Europe’s largest federation of citizens’ environmental organisations.
