New (Woollen) Threads Between Denmark and Moldova
Culture connects people, and sometimes it begins with something as simple as a tuft of wool…
In Moldova, a collaboration between the Danish artist collective Hedestrik and Moldovan artist Irina Clescenco has opened up conversations about cultural heritage, identity, sustainability, and local resources.
Through two creative workshops centred on traditional Moldovan carpet symbols and Nordic felting techniques, creative practitioners came together across generations and geographical boundaries to share knowledge, experiences, and stories about textile craftsmanship. Along the way, both new artworks and new connections were created.
For Danish Cultural Institute, the project has been a way of building bridges between young and old, between rural and urban communities, and between Moldova and Denmark. Participants gained unique insights into Moldova’s living craft traditions through encounters with local farmers, shepherds, and master weavers, including 84-year-old Tatiana from Palanca.
The project builds on our collaboration with the Gaidar Museum and the independent gallery Galeria Bunker in Chișinău, where the works created during the programme was exhibited.
