What if the future of fashion isn’t being shaped in Paris, Milan or Copenhagen – but in Kibera, Nairobi?
Danish Cultural Institute and Verdens Bedste Nyheder (World’s Best News) invite you to join internationally acclaimed Kenyan fashion designer and social entrepreneur David Avido for an inspiring conversation with journalist and editor Karoline Rahbek from the Danish news outlet Verdens Bedste Nyheder (World’s Best News).
Across the African continent, a new generation of designers is redefining what fashion can be. Here, craftmanship is rooted in a culture of repairing, repurposing, and valuing garments for longer, which naturally shapes the approach to design and fashion. Few embody this movement better than David Avido.
Growing up in Kibera – one of Africa’s largest informal settlements – David has built an internationally recognised fashion brand while creating opportunities for hundreds of young people through design, education, and entrepreneurship. As founder of Kibera Fashion Week and Avido Foundation, he demonstrates how fashion can create opportunities, encourage mindful consumption, and challenge perceptions of where creativity and innovation can come from.
In this conversation, David will share his personal journey and discuss how fashion can move beyond trends and consumption to become a powerful tool for empowerment, identity, and sustainable development.
The talk is moderated by Karoline Rahbek, journalist and editor at Verdens Bedste Nyheder (World’s Best News) – a constructive news outlet highlighting progress and solutions from around the world. Karoline has covered sustainable and circular fashion for more than a decade and brings deep insight into the industry’s challenges and opportunities.
The talk is free and open to everyone. Due to very limited seating, registration is necessary.
