Maritime expert Morten Hahn-Pedersen speaks in St. Petersburg

Morten Hahn-Pedersen, expert in maritime subjects and former director of the Fisheries and Maritime Museum, presents his newest book at plenary session

 

 

On November 6th at the plenary session of the 13th Scandinavian Readings, Morten Hahn-Pedersen, Danish maritime expert, freelance adviser, author, lecturer, researcher and storyteller, will present his newest book, describing two Russian expeditions led by Vitus Bering.

 

Hahn-Pedersen’s book På Zarens befaling (By the will of the Tsar) published this year by Gyldendal, tells about two expeditions to Kamchatka and the Northern Pacific led by Captain-Commander Vitus Bering (1681-1741), and about senior naval officer Martin Spangsberg (1696-1761) who participated. The expeditions took place from 1725-1743.

 

From the 7th to the 9th of November the Scandinavian Readings will be continued with the sections entitled “History of Nordic countries: from ancient to modern,” “Arts of Nordic countries”, “People and destinies”, “Ethnocultural aspects in Nordic countries,” “Literature and languages in Scandinavia.” The sections will be held at Danish Cultural Institute.

 

The conference’s program includes presentations by more than 80 scientists, researchers, and experts on regional studies from St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Bryansk, Chelyabinsk, Moscow, Novgorod, Novocherkassk, Perm, Petrozavodsk, Vyborg, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden.

 

 

Morten Hahn-Pedersen

Hahn-Pedersen (b. 1956) is a graduate of Århus University, he was a Museum Inspector, Deputy Director and Head of the Maritime Department of the Svendborg Museum, headed the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg for 27 years, and worked as a senior researcher at the Center of the Maritime and Regional Studies of the University of Southern Denmark for 21.

 

He has contributed to countless publications, both as an author and editor, and been involved in a wide variety of projects, including for radio and television. In addition to all his other activities, Hahn-Pedersen presents talks and leads groups on guided tours, both of which he adapts to a broad range of target demographics.

 

Morten Hahn-Pedersen was involved in the preparation of the 6-episodes tv series «Ekspeditionen – På sporet af Vitus Bering» (Expedition: In the Footsteps of Vitus Bering), aired this year by DR (the Danish Broadcasting Corporation).

 

 

The Scandinavian Readings conference is organized by Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, Danish Cultural Institute, and the St. Petersburg Centre for the Studies of History and Culture of Scandinavian Countries and Finland of the St. Petersburg Association for International Cooperation.
