European Institutes marked 50th anniversary of ’68 at FLIP
The European institutes of EUNIC marked 50th anniversary of the youth revolts of 1968 at the FLIP literary festival
At the 2018 edition of Brazil’s most prestigious literary festival FLIP, the Brazilian EUNIC cluster marked that 50 years have passed since the significant year of 1968. Besides DCI, Cultural institutes from Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain and Switzerland participated. Guest speakers was invited to provide perspective on one of the most heavily discussed years in recent European history, and the societal movements set in motion at that historical moment. Among the speakers was Danish author Niels Hav.
Inhabiting one of several “theme houses”, the EUNIC established a cultural space focusing on the events of May 1968, and drawing parallels to contemporary Brazilian and international literature and art. Five guest speakers of great renown were invited to share their perspectives on the subject. The participants were:
Niels Hav
Danish author of both poetry and prose, having penned several collections of short stories and poems, as well as contributions to newspapers. Hav has traveled in many parts of the world, achieving great insight in a range of topics and cultural conditions. At FLIP, he presented the first book of his to be translated into Portuguese Alma Dança em seu Berço.
Michael Goldfarb
Journalist, political writer and now podcaster, originally hailing from USA, now based in London. Goldfarb is a conservative voice, who has written for The Guardian, The New York Times and The Washington Post. He currently produce radio content for the BBC and has his own podcast titled FRDH: First Rough Draft of History.
Lutz Taufer
Taufer is a board member of the German Weltfriedensdienst (World Piece Service). In the 70’s he was part of a critical patients movement called SPK (Sozialistisches Patientenkollektiv) and later of the Red Army Faction called the Baader-Meinhof Group, taking part in an attack on the German embassy in Stockholm, resulting in the deaths of both terrorists and embassy staff. After serving a two decade long sentence he travelled to Uruguay and Brazil, and in 2017 his autobiography Über Grenzen. Vom Untergrund in die Favela was published.
Massimo Canevacci
Italian ethnographer, anthropologist and author. Since 2008 he has lived and worked in São Paulo, as a researcher at the Institute of Advanced Studies at University of São Paulo. He holds a Ph.d. in literature and philosophy. At FLIP he presented his study “Culturas eXtremas: mutações juvenis nos corpos das metrópoles”.
Nina Reusch
Dr. Nina Reusch is a German historian, educated from Freiburg University. She holds a position as professor at the Friedrich Meinecke Institut at Freie Universität Berlin. Gender studies and sociology are her main areas of research.
From July 25th-29th, FLIP or Festival Literaria Internacional de Paraty took place, infusing the Brazilian town of Paraty with a burst of literature and culture. The festival has been going since 2003.
Following the participation in FLIP, the EUNIC cluster also contributed to the festival for literature from the periphery, FLUP, taking place in Rio de Janeiro.
The activities concerning the 50th anniversary of 1968 was a collaboration between Danish Cultural Institute, the Goethe Institute, Instituto Cervantes, Alliance Francais, Instituto di Cultura, British Council, Pro Helvetia, the Consulate General of Hungary and Museum for Sacred Art in Paraty.
