Latvian Folk Musicians Play Concert at Aarhus 2017 – European Capital of Culture

When Rethink Folk Music 2017 take part in the spectacular opening of The European Capital of Culture – Aarhus2017 on Saturday 21 January, a group of Latvian music school students from Cesis playing the traditional Latvian string instrument “kokle” will join the celebrations.

 

The students from Latvia will play at a joint concert in the evening on Saturday 21 January, where the Latvian and Danish music school students will perform together with the Danish folk group D.u.K. at FOLKAmok. The event is taking place at the popular venue in Aarhus – HeadQuarters. Dancing is quaranteed!

 

Saturday and Sunday evening the Latvian group will also participate in the childrens opening of Aarhus2017 Flaskepost til Fremtiden, arranged by Aarhus Music School in Musikhuset Aarhus.

 

Rethink Folk Music aims to transform music school students into local music archaeologists. The project is funded by the European Capital of Culture-Foundation Aarhus 2017, and is a collaboration between museums and music schools in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Latvia, Poland and France. Organizer is Jens-Ulrik Kleemeyer.

 

Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania has initiated the collaboration between the Latvian kokle group and Rethink Folk Music 2017.

 

Rethink Folk Music 2017 Opening Camp

Since Monday this week the young Latvian musicians visiting Aarhus are taking part in Rethink Folk Music’s “Opening Camp” together with young Danish students at music schools in Aarhus. The camp is rehearsal for the concert on Saturday.

 

During the week the kokle group play three concerts. On 17 January, the group will perform a concert in Gl. Rye in collaboration with the initiative Rethink the village.
On 20 and 21 January the group will perform concerts at Musikhuset Aarhus.
