CulturalBridges2016 at “Heart of Denmark” – Rio2016 Olympic Games

When Danes travel abroad to explore new destinations, we always bring our traditions in meeting new cultures and creating of new relations. This also applies when the 2016 Olympics kicks off in August in Rio de Janeiro.

In cooperation, VisitDenmark, Danish Cyclists’ FederationDanish Architecture Center, the Agency for Culture and Palaces, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Danish Cultural Institute in Brazil have prepared the cultural program CulturalBridges2016 for the Danish pavilion during the Olympics.

CulturalBridges2016 runs parallel to Ri02016 with the purpose of sharing Danish culture and broadening the cultural exchange between Brazil and Denmark.

CulturalBridges2016 will partly take place surrounded by palm trees, bright Brazilian sun and ocean waves at the world-famous Ipanema Beach, in the beautiful Danish pavilion, Heart of Denmark.

The pavilion is designed by the acclaimed Henning Larsen Architects and developed primarily by VisitDenmark.

The culture venture is based on the strong Danish tradition of giving culture a vital part in our society, which i.a. builds on well-reputed design, sustainability and lifestyle.

Heart of Denmark and Brazil

CulturalBridges2016 embraces the Brazilian passion for music and uses music as a universal language across cultures. Therefore, Danes, locals and guests during Rio 2016 Olympic Games can look forward to enjoying spectacular sunsets at Ipanema’s golden sandy beach and watch the ferocity of the sea to the DJing by Danish producers and musicians. As a central part of CulturalBridges2016, they bring the party to the sunset sessions each day between 17-19, during the 20 opening days of the pavilion.

Every Friday and Saturday evening CulturalBridges2016 offers concerts with a wide range of musical genres of renowned Danish artists, also playing with Brazilian artists, such as jazz guitarist Jakob Bro playing with Daniel Jobim, the folk/classical duo Wenzell & Bugge, and the Danish pop band Panamah. Since 2010 Panamah has solidated their name on the Danish music scene with the hit “Ikke for sent” and in 2013 they had their first hit on Brazilian radio, sung in Danish.

Bike Games invites Brazilian children to enjoy a bikeride

What is more Danish than our world-renowned cycling culture? Following the pavilion’s bike focus, created in cooperation with the Danish Cyclists’ Federation, Danish Cultural Institute presents “the Danish way of living” through the activity Bike Games, 12th of August, on Praça Tiradentes in the center of Rio de Janeiro.

At “Bike Games” children from the age of 2 can get to experience the Danish cycling passion through play and games.

A Dialogue Between 2 Cities on the Move

In addition, throughout August, Danish Cultural Institute presents, in cooperation with Centro Carioca de Design (CCD), the exhibition Architecture with People and Copenhagen Solutions, that shows the Danish bid for plausible solutions to future sustainability, urban development and transportation challenges.

These issues will also be the themes on the 13th of August, when Danish Cultural Institute’s seminar Copenhagen X Rio de Janeiro – A Dialogue Between 2 Cities on the Move is conducted at CCD with the participation of Danish and Brazilian politicians and experts.

Interactive Together Wall communicating what we can do together

Together with our partners and sponsors, we invite athletes, locals and visiting audiences to stop by CulturalBridges2016’s great cultural events and leave a greeting on the pavilion’s interactive Together Wall, designed by the artist Thomas Damsbo. The Wall is a permanent installation at the Danish pavilion, inspired by UN’s sustainable development goals, telling the whole world “what we can do together”.

The wall emphasizes the 7 themes of the pavilion: “live together, commute together, eat together, play together, innovate together, design together and recycle together”.

We look forward to seeing you!
